HISTORY

We held the first Mendocino Mah Jongg fundraiser March 10-12, 2020 at Little River Inn's Abalone Room - right before things turned upside down. 50 players kicked off 3 days of play, some from as far away as Boston.

With Players' donations, plus support from Anderson Valley wineries, Harvest Market, Little River Inn, vendor Lee Eisman and the local Fort Bragg Rotary Club, we cleared $7,500. These funds are matched becoming $15,000!

In 2023, we had 45 players meet over a rainy weekend and savor being able to play in person, participate in an afternoon mini-tournament, bid on amazing Silent Auction items, and earning $6,915 to combat sex trafficking of Vietnamese girls. These funds are matched becoming $13,830!

GROWING THE MONEY TREE

GROWING THE MONEY TREE With our private matching donor the 2020 Mendocino March Mah Jongg proceeds became $15,000. Additional Rotary Club donations, fundraising by our committee of Interact students (Rotary sponsored high school clubs), individuals plus more and more Rotarians, enabled Sue McKinney and the Oakland Uptown Rotary Club to partner with the Rotary Club of Colombo, Sri Lanka and the Rotary Club of Queenstown, Singapore to win two matching Global Grants from The Rotary Foundation, bringing our 2020-21 total to $190,000. On the ground in Vietnam, our grants support the ongoing project of The Pacific Links Foundation. Since 2015, the Rotary District 5170 Vietnam Project has raised over $225,000 for Pacific Links to invest comprehensively in youth to prevent trafficking.  We have a matching grant for 2024.

Mah Jongg: A little History...a Little Culture

Hear Toby Salk’s lively lecture about the history of how Mah Jongg became so popular in the United States, the current Mah Jongg climate and the innovations in Mahj over the years.

Toby’s  grandmother, mother and aunts all played Mah Jongg before she was born. So, you might say she first heard the clicking of Mah Jongg tiles in the womb!

Toby currently teaches and lectures in private homes, ladies’ clubs and at Rancho La Puerta in Mexico. She also collects, restores and sells vintage Mah Jongg sets. Toby hosts a Mah Jongg Brunch for players of all levels. Don’t miss this wonderful and wacky Toby Salk talk!
