HISTORY
We held the first Mendocino Mah Jongg Fundraiser Sunday thru Tuesday, March 2020 at Little River Inn's Abalone Hall right before things turned upside down. 50 players kicked off 3 days of play, some from as far away as Boston. We learned about the Rotary D5170 Vietnam Project that we were there to support with our favorite game.
In February 2023, we came together again to play over a rainy three days, snug by a well-tended fire within the full view of the beautiful Pacific Ocean in the Abalone Hall. Participating in a mini-tournament. Silent Auction, raffles, vendors and programs by the Rotary and Toby Salk. We so enjoyed ourselves playing together in person again!
In 2024 we returned to Little River Inn’s Abalone Hall and spent three specular days of blue bird sky’s and idyllically warm weather. The fun returned with special programs, mini-Mah Jongg Tournaments, open play sessions, Vendors and games, all to support our project of Fundraising for Rotary D5170 Vietnam Project to combat sex traffic of Vietnamese girls by providing support to continue their education.
GROWING THE MONEY TREE
Growing the Money Tree - To date with our private matching donor our Mah Jongg Fun and Fundraiser proceeds are $28,000. Additional Rotary Club donations, fundraising by our committee of Interact Students (Rotary-sponsored high school clubs) individuals plus more and more Rotarians, enabled Sue McKinney and Oakland Uptown Rotary Club to partner with the Rotary Club of Colombo Sri Lanka and the Rotary Club of Queenstown, Singapore to win two matching Global Grants from the Rotary Foundation. On the ground in Vietnam, our grants support the ongoing project of the Pacific Links Foundation to invest comprehensively in youth to prevent trafficking.

PROGRAM
Sunday Night VIP Welcome Reception
We'll meet and greet each other plus learn about the important anti-trafficking work this Rotary projects supports for at-risk girls in Vietnam.
MONDAY NIGHT
"The Beauty & Soul of Mah Jongg" with Toby Salk.
Hear Toby Salk’s lively lecture about the history of how Mah Jongg became so popular in the United States, the current Mah Jongg climate and a tad about her family.
Salk’s grandmother, mother and aunts all played Mah Jongg before she was born. So, you might say she first heard the clicking and clacking of Mah Jongg tiles in the womb! You don't need to be a player to attend!
Salk currently teaches and lectures in private homes, ladies’ clubs and at Rancho La Puerta in Mexico. She also collects, restores and sells vintage Mah Jongg sets. Toby hosts a monthly Mah Jongg Brunch for players of all levels.
Don’t miss this wonderful and wacky Toby Salk talk!
